Metz was founded on the 25th of June 1953 by Phillip Metz. Its focus then was heavy duty industrial flooring and specialty corrosion resistant cements for use in chemical plants, power stations etc. Phil Metz opened a small factory in Melbourne to manufacture a specialised range of adhesives and mortars, for which we also provided an in-house installation service.
Food and beverage plants were the largest part of the business in the 1950s, however commercial kitchens have the same requirements as food plants. The need for hygienic, cleanable, heavy duty, slip resistant and corrosion resistant materials meant that Metz excelled in providing and installing materials for commercial kitchens. Without a doubt Metz has supplied and/or installed more commercial kitchen floor tiling systems than any other company in Australia.
Another specialty area we have focused on for many decades are commercial pool tiling systems. Metz’ ability to combine directly imported, purpose-made pool tiles from Europe with our own locally manufactured adhesive systems, and install them with our own labour force was unique back in the 1960s when we tiled our first pool. It is still unique today – there are no other companies able to offer such a single point of responsibility.
After decades of providing solutions for our clients in the most specialised areas of construction materials, early this century Metz began to offer a much broader, stunning range of architectural products. We now provide our clients with ranges that include multiple levels of slip resistance ratings, in many formats and designs.
Today Metz remains proudly Australian owned by the Ellis brothers, Stuart and Ian. Our traditional industrial business continues to thrive, with an emphasis on export markets. Metz has expanded significantly since its early days in the suburbs of Melbourne, with three Australian branches, an office in the Middle East and Ceramic tile Design Galleries in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. We encourage you to come and visit these Design Galleries – todays modern ceramic tiles can often only be appreciated in such dedicated spaces.
